Tire Talk: How Summer Heat Affects Tire Pressure and Performance

tires

Your tires take a beating during the summer months, especially when temperatures climb. Keeping an eye on tire condition and pressure isn’t just about extending their life—it’s about staying safe on the road. Here’s what you should know about how summer heat impacts your tires.

Heat Causes Pressure to Rise

As the temperature increases, so does the air pressure inside your tires. For every 5°C increase in temperature, tire pressure can rise by 1 PSI or more. That may not sound like much, but overinflated tires can wear unevenly and reduce your traction.

Check Pressure Regularly

Check your tire pressure at least once a month during summer, ideally when the tires are cold. Use a reliable tire gauge and compare your results with the recommended PSI found in your vehicle’s manual or door frame.

Don’t Forget the Spare

Your spare tire (if you have one) can lose pressure too. Make sure it’s properly inflated and in good condition in case you ever need it.

Inspect Tread and Sidewalls

Worn tread reduces your ability to stop on wet roads. Use the toonie test—if the silver part isn’t hidden by the tread, it’s time for new tires. Also look for cracks or bulges on the sidewalls, which can signal dry rot or damage.

Rotate and Balance

Rotating your tires every 8,000 to 10,000 km helps ensure even wear. A balanced set of tires improves ride quality, fuel economy, and extends lifespan.
